Tax Identification Number

The Tax Identification Number is a personal code assigned by the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) to identify the Italian or foreign citizen in his/her relations with Public Administrations and Entities. It is mandatory for the performance of certain fiscal or notarial acts, to grant powers of attorney, to carry out financial transactions regarding property or movable and immovable assets located in Italy or to pay taxes in Italy.

The Tax Identification Number consists of 16 characters reflecting the surname and name of the holder, year, month and day of birth, sex and place of birth.

The Tax Identification Number is valid for the entire duration of the holder’s life.

As per general rule, a paper document is issued; plastic cards are no longer issued and sent from Italy to South Africa.

The Tax Identification Number is printed on the Italian Electronic Identity Card.
