Required documentation – a parent or grandparent who holds – or held at the time of their death – exclusively Italian citizenship at the time of the applicant’s birth.

APPLICANT

  • Completed application form, to be signed on the day of the appointment in front of the consular officer.
  • Valid passport and photocopy of the page containing photo and signature.
  • Proof of residence within the consular district of this Consulate (e.g. utility bills, council tax; no driving licence or bank statement unless the applicant has no utility bills in their name).
  • Full birth certificate of the minor (unabridged birth certificate). IMPORTANT: The birth certificate must remain on file at the Consulate and therefore will not be returned.
  • Paper Apostille (or consular legalization by the country that issued the document, for countries not signatories to the 1961 Hague Convention). For South African certificates, the Apostille must be issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
  • If the certificate was not issued by the South African Department of Home Affairs, an Italian translation of the birth certificate is required — the Apostille does not need to be translated.
  • Civil status records: marriage, any divorce decree or death certificate of the spouse, and any subsequent marriage certificate.
    • Italian certificates must be requested from the competent Municipality (Comune), recently issued, and provided in original form.
    • South African certificates must be requested from the Department of Home Affairs in original form, duly legalized with an Apostille issued by DIRCO, and translated into Italian.

ASCENDANTS (GRANDPARENTS and/or PARENTS)

  • Civil status records: full birth certificate, marriage certificate, any divorce decree or death certificate of the spouse, any subsequent marriage certificate, and death certificate.
  • Italian certificates must be requested from the competent Municipality (Comune), recently issued, and provided in original form. South African certificates must be requested from the Department of Home Affairs in original form, duly legalized with an Apostille issued by DIRCO, and translated into Italian.
  • Historical certificate of residence of the ascendants (if both are Italian), issued by the competent Municipality of last residence or AIRE registration.
  • Certificates or statements of non-naturalization / absence of South African citizenship issued by the Department of Home Affairs, with DIRCO Apostille and translation. We recommend requesting certificates containing all complete details of the parent (e.g. full name and surname, any other names/surnames by which the person was known, date and place of birth and death).
