ELECTIVE RESIDENCE

You should lodge your application when you have all the required documents as detailed in the checklist: ELECTIVE RESIDENCE – NATIONAL VISA

The Elective Residence Visa in Italy is designed for people who want to live in Italy long-term without working. It’s ideal for retirees or financially independent individuals who can support themselves with stable passive income, like pensions, investments, or property income.

How it works:

  • You must prove stable passive income of at least €32,000 per year for a single person, €38,000 for a couple, plus extra for dependents.

  • You need to have a valid lease or own property in Italy for at least one year.

  • You cannot work or do remote work while on this visa.

  • You must carry private health insurance covering at least €30,000 per person.

  • A clean criminal record is required.

  • You must explain your reasons for moving permanently to Italy.

After arrival:

  • You must register at the local police (Questura) within 8 days to apply for a residence permit.

  • The permit is valid for one year and renewable annually.

  • After 5 years, you can apply for permanent residence, and after 10 years, for Italian citizenship.

This visa does not allow employment or remote work but lets you legally reside in Italy and travel freely in the Schengen Area.
