{"id":3781,"date":"2024-08-27T11:26:04","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T09:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/?page_id=3781"},"modified":"2026-08-03T17:04:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:04:15","slug":"electronic-identity-card-c-i-e","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/electronic-identity-card-c-i-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Electronic Identity Card (C.I.E.)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>LATEST NEWS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Please note that Italian paper identity cards (Carta d&#8217;Identit\u00e0 Cartacea \u2013 CIC) will no longer be valid as of 3 August 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Validity of the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) for citizens aged 70 and over: <\/strong>As of <strong>30 July 2026<\/strong>, the Electronic Identity Card (Carta d&#8217;Identit\u00e0 Elettronica \u2013 CIE) issued to citizens who are <strong>70 years of age or older<\/strong> at the time of application will have <strong>unlimited validity<\/strong>, while remaining valid for international travel. Please note that the Electronic Identity Card has <strong>unlimited validity<\/strong> and does <strong>not<\/strong> need to be renewed when used <strong>exclusively as a proof of identity<\/strong>. However, if the card is also used to access <strong>online public services<\/strong> or <strong>automated electronic gates (e-gates) at airports<\/strong> through the CIE system, it will <strong>not<\/strong> have unlimited validity. In such cases, the card must be <strong>renewed upon the expiration of its standard ten-year validity period<\/strong> in order to continue being used for these purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Starting from 1 June, all Italian citizens registered with AIRE may apply for an Electronic Identity Card (CIE) at any municipality (Comune) in Italy, and no longer exclusively through the Consular Office.\u00a0 <\/strong>To apply for a CIE at a municipality, applicants may book an appointment through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prenotazionicie.interno.gov.it\/cittadino\/n\/sc\/wizardAppuntamentoCittadino\/sceltaComune\">Ministry of the Interior&#8217;s online booking platform<\/a> or, where permitted by the municipality, apply in person without an appointment. In the latter case, the CIE may either be collected from the municipality where the application was submitted or, upon request, sent abroad through the competent Italian Consulate or Embassy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Please also note that the Electronic Identity Card <strong>is not issued on the spot at the Consulate<\/strong>. The document is produced in Italy and subsequently sent by post, generally within two to three months from the date of the appointment. Longer waiting times may also result from processing and delivery times of the South African postal service and are therefore beyond the control of this Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>Italian nationals registered with AIRE at this Consulate General are invited to book an appointment for the issuance of their Electronic Identity Card through the <a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\"><strong>Prenot@Mi<\/strong><\/a> portal.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>1. What is the Electronic Identity Card?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>An ID card is an identification document used to verify a person\u2019s identity and to travel to EU Member States, some Schengen States (i.e. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) and other States with which bilateral agreements have been reached (please visit each country tab on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/\">www.viaggiaresicuri.it<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h6><strong>2. Who can apply for an Electronic Identity Card?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>This Consulate General can issue the C.I.E. exclusively to Italian citizens <strong>regularly resident in this consular district and registered in AIRE<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>If your residential address has changed<\/strong> (compared to the one previously communicated to the Consular Office), you must request the <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/anagrafe-degli-italiani-residenti-allestero-aire\/\">change of address<\/a> via the <a href=\"https:\/\/serviziconsolarionline.esteri.it\/ScoFE\/index.sco\">FAST IT portal<\/a> <strong>before booking<\/strong> the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>For the C.I.E. to be issued,<b>\u00a0a validated <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/codice-fiscale\/\">tax code<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>is also required.<\/p>\n<h6>3. <strong>When can I apply for a C.I.E.?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>to replace a valid paper Identity Card.<\/li>\n<li>for the first issuance of an Identity Card.<\/li>\n<li>in the event of theft, loss or deterioration of the previous Card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>4. How do I request the electronic identity card (C.I.E.)?<\/h6>\n<p>The application for an Electronic Identity Card must be submitted exclusively via the <a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\">Prenot@MI portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To book an appointment, please follow the procedure below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Register on <a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\">https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it<\/a> and choose \u201c<em>Consolato Generale d\u2019Italia Johannesburg<\/em>\u201d as the relevant Consulate.<\/li>\n<li>Once registration is complete, select the \u201c<em>Book<\/em>\u201d tab from the horizontal menu at the top of the screen.<\/li>\n<li>Click the \u201cBOOK\u201d button under \u201c<em>Identity\/Travel Documents \u2013 ID Card<\/em>\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select booking type and enter the applicants\u2019 details, then click on \u201cFORWARD\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select the desired date from the calendar (available dates are marked in green), then click on \u201cBOOK\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ATTENTION: In the event that, during the verification phase, elements are found that prevent the processing of the application, the citizen will be informed of the reasons for the cancellation of the appointment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h6>5. Is it possible to request an appointment for my minor children?<\/h6>\n<p>Yes. Whilst booking your appointment, a form must be filled out for each applicant. It will be possible to book an appointment for a maximum of 4 people with a single request.<\/p>\n<h6>6. <strong>What documents must I submit at the appointment?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The applicant must bring the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A recent passport-sized photograph, compliant with <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ICAO-Standard.pdf\">ICAO international standards<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Previous Identity Card. If not applicable, an identification document (even if expired)<\/li>\n<li>Where applicable, declaration of loss\/theft to the local authorities of the previous Card<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Atto-di-assenso-Pass-e-CIE-2024.pdf\">Consent from<\/a> both parents if the applicant is a minor under 18 (see point 9)<\/li>\n<li>Payment should preferably be made by South African debit card or EFT in South African Rand. Cash is also accepted, provided that the exact amount is tendered. How do I receive my Electronic Identity Card?<\/h6>\n<p><strong>The C.I.E. is issued by the Ministry of the Interior and produced by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato<\/strong>, which sends it, by registered mail, to the applicant&#8217;s address or, upon request, to the Consulate General&#8217;s post office box. In this case, once the C.I.E. has been received, the Consulate General will contact the applicant by email providing instructions for collection in person or by courier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citizens are encouraged not to follow up on the receipt of the C.I.E. before 90 working days<\/strong>. After this period, those who have not yet received the notification of collection can send an email to <a href=\"mailto:consolare.johannesburg@esteri.it\">consolare.johannesburg@esteri.it<\/a>, specifying the registered mail number (<em>numero di raccomandata<\/em>) displayed on the application.<\/p>\n<h6>8. How long is the C.I.E. valid?<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>3 years of validity for minors between the ages of 0 and 3<\/li>\n<li>5 years of validity for minors between the ages of 4 and 17<\/li>\n<li>10 years of validity for adults<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>9. What is the act of parental consent?<\/h6>\n<p>If the applicant is a minor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Atto-di-assenso-Pass-e-CIE-2024.pdf\">parental consent form<\/a> must be completed and signed by both parents. The <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Atto-di-assenso-Pass-e-CIE-2024.pdf\">parental consent<\/a> is also necessary in the case of unmarried, separated or divorced parents. If the other parent is an <strong>EU citizen<\/strong>, the presence of the same at the Consulate General is not necessary. The completed and signed <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Atto-di-assenso-Pass-e-CIE-2024.pdf\">form<\/a> will be sufficient together with a photocopy of the passport or identity card of the person granting the consent, for the comparison of the signatures. The <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Atto-di-assenso-Pass-e-CIE-2024.pdf\">form<\/a> and the document must be sent by email to <a href=\"mailto:consolare.johannesburg@esteri.it\">consolare.johannesburg@esteri.it<\/a> in the days preceding the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>If the parent granting the consent is <strong>not an EU citizen<\/strong> (e.g. <strong>South African citizens<\/strong>) the <a href=\"https:\/\/consjohannesburg.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Atto-di-assenso-Pass-e-CIE-2024.pdf\">consent form<\/a> must be signed in one of the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>at the Consulate General in Johannesburg on the day of the appointment, upon presentation of an identity document.<\/li>\n<li>If resident in KwaZulu-Natal, at the office of Honorary Consul in Durban Costantino Buccimazza, by appointment.<\/li>\n<li>At any Italian Embassy or Consulate in the world, if resident in a country other than South Africa.<\/li>\n<li>In the event of the death of one of the parents, a copy of the death certificate must be presented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>10. Do I have to request a new Card if I change address?<\/h6>\n<p>No. The Identity Card is an identity document and not a residence document.<\/p>\n<h6>11. Is it possible for married women to enter their husband&#8217;s surname?<\/h6>\n<p>No. The Identity Card is an identity document and not a civil status document.<\/p>\n<h6>12. <strong>May I apply for ID card in my Municipality in Italy even if I am resident abroad?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Please check with the Municipality in Italy.<\/p>\n<h6>13. The cost of the document is:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First issue<\/strong> <strong>or renewal<\/strong>: 21.95 Euro, to be paid <strong>in local currency (Rand)<\/strong>, at the Consulate General (South African debit card, no credit cards).
