Experience Italian cinema through the ages during the month of May

The month of May brings to Joburg a celebration of Italian cinema, with a satellite edition of the Johannesburg Italian Film Festival (JIFF). The festival celebrates the life and career of famed Italian actor and director, Vittorio Gassman, and simultaneously screens a separate series of contemporary Italian films.

One of the greatest Italian actors, the late Vittorio Gassman featured in countless theatre productions and movies over his 60-year career, including Hollywood hits such as Sleepers.

Gassman’s stepson, Emanuele Salce, himself an actor, will be travelling to South Africa, not only to promote his late stepfather’s films, but to perform his new play, Mumble Mumble. The play is an autobiographical tragi-comedy about his two fathers – his biological father, director Luciano Salce, and his stepfather, Vittorio Gassman.

As well as films and theatre about Gassman, JIFF will also bring to local screens a contemporary Italian film every Sunday in May.
